About the teacher
I play guitar originally and expanded later into piano. I’m classically trained in both instruments, studying with Douglas Niedt, chair of the UMKC guitar department and Karen Kushner, adjunct professor of piano at UMKC. I also studied jazz guitar with Jay EuDaly and Danny Embrey. I have taught privately and in group settings for over ten years now, and I regularly play in the Kansas City area.
Teaching philosophy and approach to teaching
I prefer a holistic approach to music, starting with the recognition that all music comes from the same source. Correspondingly I am every open to the style of music that the student interested in, but I require that they approach that style from an open perspective. I emphasize thorough and intricate knowledge of the instrument, good working knowledge of music theory and eventually solid reading skills. Various curriculum are used depending upon the student’s interest and skill level.
