About the teacher
I have been playing guitar since the age of 5. At the age of 17, I won first place in a nationwide talent search for stringed-instrument musicians in the Philippines. I pursued a degree and career in Mechanical Engineering. However my passion for guitar and music prolonged and inspired me to study music at the Asian Institute of Liturgical Music and University of Philippines under Maestro Lester Demetillo. I majored in classical guitar and choir conducting that featured voice and piano.
In the United States I continued classical guitar training under the world renowned classical guitarist, Hector Garcia, who was also the assistant to legend guitarist Emilio Pujol of Spain. I also attended a master class with classical guitarist, Christopher Parkening.
I perform a broad spectrum of musical styles: Classical, Spanish and Latin, American Popular and music of the Philippines. In 1993, I directed the Saniweng Rondalla in Rio Rancho, New Mexico and Rondalla Maharlika of New Mexico. Ensembles comprising mandolin instruments of various sizes including guitar and string bass. I thought classical guitar and various stringed instruments for the Rondalla. In addition, I was a member of the Albuquerque de Profundis, an capella men’s choir.
I have performed in several concert tours across the United States and Canada. I performed classical guitar concerts with Hector Garcia and other artists. On two occasions I performed with a band as the lead guitarist for President Clinton, once in Washington, D.C. and once in New Mexico. I was also featured guest artist on the Canadian TV equivalent of Good Morning America in Winnipeg, Canada in 2000. In addition to performing classical music, I entertain the public with my own arrangements of Latin and a wide range of popular music in special events and private bookings.
Education relevant to teaching music
I studied Music at the Asia Institude of Lithurgical Music specializing in Classical Guitar and Conducting. I also have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Teaching philosophy and approach to teaching
My approach to teaching is evaluating student’s interest and experience in relation to music. Each student is different based on level. My job as a teacher is to focus on the goals of my students and to share all the knowledge and experience I have in music and guitar in order to help the student succeed.
