About the teacher
I have a music education degree and have been making a living performing while working jobs, some part time some full time, for the last nine years. I thoroughly enjoyed my student teaching experience but had work performing when I graduated from college so I never pursued a teaching job. I’ve always taught lessons on the side and recently decided I want to make it a larger part of my life. I’m a classically trained opera singer but I have experience “crossing over” so I’m confident I can teach many different disciplines. I love to laugh and have a good time and I’m an avid fan of people. I have a passion for sharing my talent with others and I love to see people succeed.
Teaching philosophy and approach to teaching
First, every student is different yet the same. I say that because what works for a fifteen year old female singer may not work for a fifteen year old male singer but the vocal function i.e. the end result should be similar. I believe that you can teach discipline and and craft but you can’t teach talent. You have to approach every situation individually. If I have a student who doesn’t have the natural talent that another student does, I’m never going to say “you don’t have what it takes.” I’m going to pour everything I have into their technique and craft I can so that they are a fantastic musician who has the tools to use what they have. Also, just because a person has natural talent doesn’t mean they’re going to be the best student. I’m going to build work ethic into them so they don’t rely only on talent but ensure that they too are the best musician they can be. I believe that the learning environment should be fun and easy but structured and driven with an end result in mind. You should come to every lesson with three questions answered, “What did take away from your last lesson?” “What did you practice between now and then?” and “What are you going to accomplish in this lesson?”
